Research call on drug resistance now open
The transnational project call Disrupting drug resistance using innovative design is now open. The call involves 27 funding organisations from 18 countries and the total estimated call budget is about 19 million Euro.
This call aims to improve the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections (including co-infection) and/or the prevention of the emergence/spread of resistance in humans, animals or plants through the improvement of the efficacy, specificity, delivery, combinations and/or repurposing of drugs and plant protection agents.
The call will follow a two-step evaluation procedure and the deadline for pre-proposals is 8 March 2022.

Main achievements of the AMR Transmission Dynamics call
The outputs, outcomes and the impact generated by the projects supported under the 2016 JPIAMR joint co-funded call “AMR Transmission Dynamics have now been published in a report. The report highlights the effect of supporting excellent science through transnational research collaborations.
Numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles in highly recognised journals have been published by the supported projects on the research findings, and a patent has been filed on a new peptide molecule discovered in one of the projects.
Other impact highlights are:
- New knowledge generation to address AMR at regional, national and global scale with a One Health approach.
- Science-based policy and societal impact.
- Innovative tools and analytical methods and technologies.
- Interdisciplinary expertise in transnational collaboration.
AMR Transmission Dynamics call
The third JPIAMR joint co-funded call “AMR Transmission Dynamics” was launched in 2016. The call was conducted by 21 participating funding organisations from 18 countries and was co-funded by the European Commission (EC) within the JPI-EC-AMR ERA-Net co-fund grant . The call resulted in the awarding of 29.1 million euros (M EUR) including a 6.3 M EUR contribution from the EC to 19 research projects. The 19 project consortia included a total of 118 researchers from 16 countries aiming to bridge the knowledge gap on AMR transmission mechanisms.
The call was one of the first of its kind to address transmission of antibiotic resistance following a One Health approach not only focussing the European and North American countries but also including research activities in the low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).
JPIAMR celebrating 10 years of achievements
It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge that JPIAMR officially celebrates ten years as an international collaborative platform. From its inception in December 2011 until today, JPIAMR has achieved and exceeded its mission to coordinate national funding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research, guided by a shared strategic research and innovation agenda. Today 28 countries fund AMR research with a One Health approach, as members of JPIAMR. More than 1 400 researchers in 71 countries have been engaged in research that has been funded by JPIAMR members. In total, 125 million Euros have been allocated to research and networking which has achieved outstanding results and impacts. This highlights the role of JPIAMR as a key initiative helping to understand and curb AMR on a global scale.
JPIAMR is leading the development of the One Health AMR Partnership within the Horizon Europe Framework Programme. We look forward to working together with members to seek and support solutions to curb AMR.

Pre-announcement: Research call on drug resistance
We are pleased to pre-announce the transnational project call Disrupting drug resistance using innovative design under the umbrella of the JPIAMR. The call will involve 26 funding organisations from 17 countries and the total estimated call budget is about 17 million Euro.
This call aims to improve the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections (including co-infection) and/or the prevention of the emergence/spread of resistance in humans, animals or plants through the improvement of the efficacy, specificity, delivery, combinations and/or repurposing of drugs and plant protection agents.
The call opens on 11 January 2022.

Pre-announcement: Diagnostics and surveillance network call
JPIAMR is launching the call Diagnostics and Surveillance Networks in April 2022 with the aim to assemble networks of leading experts and stakeholders with an intent to facilitate the development, optimisation and use of diagnostic and surveillance tools, technologies and systems.
Eleven (11) JPIAMR-ACTION members are participating in this network call to date. Each network coordinator will be able to apply for a maximum of 50,000 Euro for 12 or 24 months period for support of its activities.

JPIAMR awards new projects in the area of transmission and interventions
Nineteen projects involving 114 partners from 35 different countries have been recommended for funding within the JPIAMR 13th transnational call One Health interventions to prevent or reduce the development and transmission of antimicrobial resistance. The total funding amount is 25,6 M€.
The call, launched in January 2021, was within the framework of the ERA-NET JPIAMR-ACTION and supported by 30 research funding organisations from 21 countries and by the European Commission. Using a One Health approach, the call aimed to understand the impact of interventions on the development and transmission of antibiotic resistance and to design, implement, evaluate, and compare interventions reducing the development and transmission of antibiotic resistance. Applicants were encouraged to consider the use of interventions that may have an impact in areas where the risk and burden of AMR is greatest, such as in Low and Middle Income countries.
The projects recommended for funding are:
- Combating Antibiotic Resistance in Philippine Lakes: One Health upstream interventions to reduce the burden (ARPHILAKE)
- Optimising community antibiotic use and environmental infection control with behavioural interventions in rural Burkina Faso and DR Congo (CABU-EICO)
- Impact of reducing colistin use on colistin resistance in humans and poultry in Indonesia (COINCIDE)
- COMplex Biofilms and AMR Transmission (COMBAT)
- Designing One Health Governance for Antimicrobial Stewardship Interventions (DESIGN)
- Interventions to control the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance from chickens through the environment (ENVIRE)
- FARM interventions to Control Antimicrobial ResistancE (FARM-CARE)
- Targeted removal of ARGs and facultative pathogenic bacteria (FPB) in wastewater from AMR hotspots using modular advanced treatment solutions (HOTMATS)
- Ionophore coccidiostats: risk of CO-selectioN of antImicrobial resistance – Clinical impact and intervention strategies (ICONIC)
- Interventions to decrease CRE colonization and transmission between hospitals, households, communities and domesticated animals (I-CRECT)
- Microbiota Intervention Strategies Limiting Selection and Transmission of Antibiotic Resistance burden in the One Health domain (MISTAR)
- Novel interventions for eliminating one-health mobile antimicrobial resistance genes from human and animal microbiomes (MOB-TARGET)
- Use of phage applications to combat MRSA at the sow-piglet interface to reduce exposure of staff and contamination of the environment (PHAGE-EX)
- Phage treatment and wetland technology as intervention strategy to prevent dissemination of antibiotic resistance in surface waters (PhageLand)
- Phage Therapy to Reduce AMR Enterobacteria Spread from a One Health Perspective (Phage-Stop-AMR)
- Selecting Efficient Farm-level Antimicrobial Stewardship Interventions from a one health perspective (SEFASI)
- Strengthening implementation of National Action Plans through a One Health AMR full economic costing exercise (SNAP ONE)
- Specific Targeting of Antimicrobial Resistant Strains in situ using Targeted-Antibacterial-Plasmids (STARS-TAP)
- Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals, Resistance Selection and Transfer in a One Health Context (STRESST)

The JPIAMR Secretariat is looking for a senior research officer with a background in medicine and health. With us, you get to work with committed colleagues in an international context to strengthen research and research collaboration on antimicrobial resistance. You will be employed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet), based in central Stockholm, and also take part in the work on the Swedish national research programme on antibiotic resistance.
Senior research officer focusing on antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance is a global problem that impacts on us all. Resistance in bacteria leads to infections that are difficult to treat, and means that complicated medical interventions can not longer be carried out without functioning antibiotics. It is difficult to develop new antibiotics, and we are also at risk of bacteria quickly developing resistance to them through careless and incorrect use. To increase the impact of research, Sweden established a national research programme on antibiotic resistance in 2016, and has since 2011 been one of the driving countries within the global research collaboration Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR). Today, JPIAMR involved around thirty countries across the world, and is also receiving strong support from the European Commission. The Swedish Research Council is coordinating the collaboration, and is responsible for the joint JPIAMR Secretariat.
Role and job description
We are offering a role as senior research officer within the field of medicine and health, where you together with knowledgeable and committed colleagues are part of the secretariat that the Swedish Research Council provides for the international collaboration Joint Programming Initiative Antimicrobial resistance (JPIAMR, www.jpiamr.eu). You will also take part in the work on the national research programme on antibiotic resistance, and may also be included in other tasks within the department. The role requires some travel (under normal circumstances), primarily within the EU.
The tasks include:
- supporting the global collaboration, together with the other personnel at the JPIAMR Secretariat, which includes
- taking part in the design and implementation of JPIAMR’s strategic research agendas
- designing, implementing and administrating joint international calls
- designing and implementing conferences and workshops, following up and analysing research funded by JPIAMR
- leading work teams and collaborations between the member countries
- initiating and implementing communication inputs and maintaining contacts with international partners and stakeholders
- providing scientific and technical advice linked to antimicrobial resistance
- supporting the direction of the collaboration through coordination and communication between the various JPIAMR steering groups, including producing relevant documents, overviews and reports
- consulting with other national programmes to drive the national research programme for antibiotic resistance, which includes
- consulting with experts in the area to update and implement strategic research agendas.
- consulting with experts in the area to implement national and international calls, conferences and workshops
- implementing communication initiatives and maintaining and developing national networks of relevance for antibiotic resistance
- following up the research funded via the national programme
- coordinating the national research programme with the European framework programme and the global collaboration JPIAMR
- monitoring international research in antimicrobial resistance, including resources invested and research priorities
- plus other tasks arising within the Swedish Research Council, such as taking part in department analysis and evaluation.
Your background
You must have:
- experience of coordinating and providing strategic support to international research collaborations
- good overall knowledge of, and working networks within, the medical research field in Sweden
- a doctoral degree or corresponding within an area of relevance to antimicrobial resistance (microbiology, infectious diseases, or similar)
- good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written, as the working language within the JPIAMR Secretariat is primarily English
- experience of project management
- good ability to absorb and communicate scientific information, both spoken and written, in a way suited to the target group
- worked with research and its importance for societal development
It is an advantage if you have:
- experience of own research activities in a field of relevance to antimicrobial resistance
- experience from Swedish public administration, HEI management, public agency in a relevant factual area, or similar, good knowledge of EU institutions and working methods
- experience of managing and administering EU projects
- experience of working with international collaboration partners
- experience of implementing international calls with peer review

We are looking for a person who is committed, proactive, and has well-developed strategic thinking. You must like taking initiatives and working independently, and at the same time communicate well and establish good and trusting relationships, in internal as well as national and international collaboration. Our offices are at Västra Järnvägsgatan 3 in central Stockholm. In April 2022 we will be moving to Hantverkargatan 11 in Stockholm.

Welcome to our new website!
The new JPIAMR website has been launched! It has a new design and new structure with the aim to improve user accessibility.
The site’s content is now partly re-structured and we have created clear entries on the start page to the most sought after content. All research calls have their own pages with links to the projects and networks awarded funding within each call. The Projcets section contains a possibility to filter projects by call or by JPIAMR Priority topic.
